It’s been just four months since Terence Crawford last competed. Still, many people around the world have been anxious to see who he’ll face next in the ring. New reports claim that Bob Arum and Terence Crawford have a huge announcement being planned for next week.
Crawford’s next fight is expected to be a big one. Today, we’ll talk about who “Bud” might be facing the next time he steps into the ring. We’ll also discuss what some of the other top welterweights have planned this year.
Let’s get into it!
Boxing’s Pound-for-Pound Best Debate Continues
There are more high-level athletes competing in the sport of boxing right now than ever before in history. Just about every single weight division is now home to true superstars. The debate over who is the best pound-for-pound boxer in the sport continues.
This is more difficult now than ever before. Many of the top boxing media outlets have different individuals listed as the sport’s best fighter. There are some boxers that most agree are at least in the discussion to be called the pound-for-pound best.
Canelo Alvarez is considered by many to be the best boxer alive. He is now 55-1-2 as a professional with wins over legends including Shane Mosely, Miguel Cotto, and Gennady Golovkin. His most recent victory over Avni Yildirim was impressive, yet most believe Avni had no business being in the same ring as Alvarez. Canelo is now set to take on Billy Joe Saunders in May.
Naoya Inoue is another boxer nearing the top of the pound-for-pound rankings. He’s 20-0 in the sport and holds multiple titles in the bantamweight division. This June, he’ll be taking on Michael Dasmarinas in Las Vegas.
Terence Crawford is also in the discussion as the top pound-for-pound boxer in the world. He’s never lost inside the ring and has an extremely high knockout ratio. Unfortunately, he’s faced criticism in the past for not taking on the toughest challengers.
That may not be entirely Terence’s fault. New reports indicate we’ll be getting a new announcement on Terence Crawford’s next opponent soon.
Bob Arum and Terence Crawford Will Soon Reveal a New Opponent
Terence Crawford is clearly a world-class boxer. He’s finished some of the best welterweights on the planet. Back in November of 2020, he scored a fourth-round knockout over Kell Brook after losing some of the fight’s earlier rounds.
Bob Arum is tasked with promoting all of Crawford’s fights. It hasn’t always been the ideal relationship between these men, though. Bob Arum and Terence Crawford have been verbally sparring for a long time and it seemed as if they would part ways at some point.
That no longer seems to be the case. Arum spoke to the media this week and revealed that a major fight announcement for Terence will come out next week. You can check out his comments below.
“There will be an announcement on Bud Crawford’s next fight within a week,” he said. “I can’t reveal it now, but it’ll be a major fight. A date, and a place and everything, but I’m not at liberty to discuss it at this time… This is a big deal; this is not any old fight. This is a big deal. I’ll be announced next week, and all the details will be announced at that time.”
Obviously, fans are now busy trying to predict who Terence will be facing next. Any hope that it is Errol Spence Jr. seems unrealistic. Not long ago, Crawford told the media that this fight was dead, and would never come together.
There are some men that Terence has been discussing lately, though. Now is the perfect time to predict who he might be facing off against.
Most Likely Opponents for Terence to Face This Year
It’s been hard for Terence Crawford to find the right opponents lately. It may be unfair to claim he isn’t taking on the toughest challengers. Fighters recognize how good he is and many are unwilling to face off against him and potentially derail their careers.
There are still some fantastic welterweights available for Crawford to face in the future. The aforementioned Errol Spence Jr. is obviously the biggest opponent. That is probably not going to be next for “Bud,” though.
Instead, many believe that he will be taking on Vergil Ortiz Jr. The 23-year-old is now 17-0 as a professional and had a fantastic amateur career, as well. He would be an excellent test for Crawford to step into the ring against.
Manny Pacquiao is another possibility. Arum seems to be claiming that this is a fight unlike any others in Crawford’s career. A fight against Pacquiao would likely be one of the biggest boxing matches in recent history.
Bob Arum and Terence Crawford are clearly working on something big. It seems likely that Terence’s next fight will take place this summer. We’ll be sure to offer updates on this next opponent as soon as the announcement comes out.
