The Olympics are underway in Tokyo after Friday’s perfectly pitched Opening Ceremony officially kicked off a two-week extravaganza of live sport.
Britain could enjoy an early medal rush in Japan with several leading medal chances across the first few days of the games.
We’ve glanced over the latest Olympics betting to assess some of the more likely gold medal prospects in British colours from the opening week…
Olympics Betting Predictions | GB’s Best Bets For Gold
Britain’s best medal chances could come from the Aquatics Centre as the swimming finals dominate the first week of the games, but first up we’re off to the Asaka Shooting Range…
🥇 SEONID MCINTOSH
WOMEN’S 10M AIR RIFLE, (SAT, FROM 00:30) – 27/1
McIntosh is one of the longer gold medal possibilities of the weekend but has an outside shot at the medals if everything comes together in the 10m air rifle. As the reigning world champion in the 50m air rifle, any medal for the Scottish-born rising star would be an added bonus for GB as they look to make a flying start to the games.
🥇 MOLLY RENSHAW (SWIMMING)
WOMEN’S 200M BREASTSTROKE – 77/20
While Adam Peaty looks locked on to bring home at least a few golds from Japan, Renshaw could be the value bet in the Aquatics Centre this week.
She’s a World Champion and European Champion in this discipline but faces a likely battle royale with Tatjana Schoenmaker to land her first Olympic gold.
Her South African rival was dominant in their last major duel, the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, but Renshaw will arrive here with plenty of confidence after an impressive 2020 campaign that saw her win two European golds.
🥇 GB MEN’S RELAY TEAM (SWIMMING)
MEN’S 4X200M FREESTYLE RELAY – 7/4
It was silver for the quad of Stephen Milne, Duncan Scott, Daniel Wallace, James Guy in Rio as they clocked in three seconds behind a powerful USA men’s team that included both Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte, but could the relay team go one better in Tokyo?
They stand every chance here, with British record holder Duncan Scott returning to lead the charge in a relay event that looks wide open.
🥇 BRADLY SINDEN
TAEKWONDO MEN’S FEATHERWEIGHT (68 KG) – (SUN, FROM 02:00) – 41/25
While all the focus in the build-up to the games has been on his teammate Jade Jones’ chances of joining the ranks of the all-time Olympics greats, GB also had a rock-solid contender for the podium in the men’s featherweight in Sinden. The 22-year-old Doncaster athlete will be aiming to add an Olympic gold to the World Championship gold he won in Manchester in 2019.
To achieve his ultimate sporting dream, he may need to overcome vastly experienced South Korean rival Lee Dae-hoon, who is looking to complete the set after picking up a silver and bronze at previous games.
🥇JADE JONES
TAEKWONDO WOMEN’S FEATHERWEIGHT (57 KG) – (SUN, FROM 02:00) – 12/25
Finally, if Adam Peaty is Britain’s surefire bet to secure gold on opening weekend, the relentless Welsh judoka Jones is not far behind.
A heroic performer for Team GB at both 2012 and 2016, Jones is a heavy favourite to bring home a third gold in the featherweight at these games.
She arrives here as the undisputed one to beat having finally secured the World Championship title in this discipline two years ago.
