The Arizona Department of Gaming has released its report on September’s sports betting figures. Arizonans wagered nearly $540 million on sports during that month, which represents an 84.7% increase when compared to September of 2021, which was the state’s first month of legal wagering.
“September was clearly a strong month for Arizona sports betting, with the state seeing over $245 million more in wagers when compared to the same month of 2021,” said Ted Vogt, Director, ADG. “I am excited to see how the industry progresses through the winter months, which generally has the most popular sports for wagering in the United States.”
The state saw approximately $538 million in wagers during the month of September, resulting in over $3 million in privilege fees collected by the state. In addition to being up from the same period in 2021, September’s handle is also 49% above handle figures for the previous month, when bettors wagered $361 million on sports. It marks the third consecutive month of growth.

Players spent $533.3 million betting online during the month, while only just $4 million was wagered at retail sportsbook facilities in the state. The month was helped by the return of the NFL and revenue for operators clocked in at $55.2 million, an $18.9 million improvement from August and a 74.7% increase from the same month in 2021.
Adjusted gross revenue saw the greatest variation year-over-year. With promotional credits and deductions eating up less of the bottom line, operators posted an adjusted gross revenue of $30.7 million, compared to just $392K in 2021. Thus, the state collected about $3.1 million in revenue tax, against just $31K the previous year.
A year later, Arizona has expanded from eight mobile operators – with two of them also having a retail presence – to 18 active operators, of which three have a land-based presence. Most of the handle is concentrated on DraftKings and FanDuel, which provided nearly two-thirds of the mobile action in September.
Earlier this week, DraftKings furthered its commitment to the Arizona market by breaking ground on the DraftKings Sportsbook at TPC Scottsdale. The 12,000-square-foot gaming and dining amenity will be the first sportsbook ever to be built at a PGA Tour tournament site.
