California Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law Wednesday a bill that would exempt two tribal gaming projects from review under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). Senate Bill 900, introduced by state Sen. Melissa Hurtado, D-Sanger, and co-authored by Assemblyman Rudy Salas, D-Bakersfield, ratifies gaming compacts between the state of California and two tribes —the Santa Rosa Rancheria Tachi Yokut Tribe, and the Middletown Rancheria Band of Pomo Indians. Tanzi joined Wednesday members of the union that represent workers at Rhode Island’s casinos in calling for passage of her legislation to include casinos in the state’s law prohibiting smoking in workplaces. As reported by the Nevada Gaming Control Board on Thursday, state casinos have recorded their 14th straight month of at least $1 billion in gaming revenue during April, shattering the former record revenue for the month. However, figures show this is the first time in more than a year the numbers have stalled at a one-digit increase.  Casinos statewide collected almost $1.13 billion in gaming revenue last month, with more than 85% of the total coming from Clark County. Bally’s two casinos in Rhode Island have sued their respective host jurisdictions seeking tax reductions due to pandemic-related closures. Earlier this month, Bally’s Tiverton Casino & Hotel filed a lawsuit against the town of Tiverton in state Superior Court alleging it is being overtaxed, as reported by Boston Globe.
