I n an open letter to the industry, Bill Miller, President & CEO of the American Gaming Association (AGA) addressed the additional relief that is been discussed in the U.S. Congress. “While gaming continues to responsibly reopen across the country, our industry remains among the hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic and additional federal support is needed to weather this storm,” the letter begins. Pot odds are among the most critical concepts in Texas holdem. The idea is relatively simple, but many beginners pay no attention to the concept of pot odds. Implied odds are also significant, and new poker players who ignore pot odds have no idea about implied odds, either. This post aims to introduce both concepts. Since implied odds are a specific way of looking at pot odds, I’ll start by explaining pot odds. What Are Pot Odds and How Do They Work? Odds are a ratio of how likely something is to happen compared to how likely it is to…

The gambling world is full of a variety of players with different styles of play and varying rates of success. The fact of the matter is the house always has an edge, regardless of the game you play, which means that most gamblers go to casinos and lose money. Gambling for hours on end is taxing, and the results of each hand can swing emotions rapidly. The best gamblers don’t always come out on top, no matter how well they play. You can have a foolproof plan, play with perfect strategy, and still lose money. Casinos are full of gamblers…
I don’t know what state you live in or, for that matter, even if you live in the United States. Depending on where you live, a casino license might or might not matter. This post looks at some of the aspects of casino licensing that matter (or don’t), depending on where you live. It’s not meant to be a guide to legal issues. I’m not a legal professional. But I am good at evaluating risks, though, and that’s the approach I’m going to take in this post. What Is a Casino License? Some businesses, especially those that deal in “sin,”…
August 3, 2020 Even as Nevada casinos fight their way back, the President of the Las Vegas Sands believes the economic hardships will continue until a vaccine is developed for COVID-19. In a recent interview, Robert Goldstein told reporters that he believes casinos across the state and in Las Vegas will struggle economically so long as the pandemic lasts. His comments come just two days after the announcement that the biggest technology show in America will be an online and not in Las Vegas, dealing another blow to the Las Vegas economy. “It’s clearly a difficult time for us ….…
Teams Runline Moneyline Total White Sox -1.5 (+140) -105 Over 9.5 (-110) Brewers +1.5 (-160) -105 Under 9.5 (-110) For now, the 2020 Major League Baseball season is moving forward. Commissioner Rob Manfred said over the weekend that he currently has no plans to pull the plug, so we still have baseball for the time being. That can certainly change any day at this point, but it’s safe to assume Monday’s slate of games will proceed as scheduled. We have a few interleague games on the schedule, including an intriguing matchup between the Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago White Sox. The…
August 2, 2020 Casinos in Las Vegas reopened just two months ago, but fears of Coronavirus lawsuits have them concerned a different sort of closure could be ahead. Now, the Nevada Resort Association is pushing lawmakers for legislation that will protect casinos from “unfounded” legal action against them related to COVID-19. The Resort Association said businesses that are “working responsibly and in good faith” should not be subjected to costly litigation. Since the June 4th reopening, casinos and resorts did implement safety plans with measures such as enhanced cleaning, social distancing guidelines and employee and guest temperature checks. The association…

I’ve written about countless variations of blackjack, but perhaps the easiest one to understand is multiple action blackjack, also referred to as multi-action blackjack. In fact, this variation is so straightforward that this post might be a little shorter than usual. Here’s what you need to know about multiple action blackjack. The Rules of Multiple Action Blackjack The rules for multiple action blackjack are the same as the rules for standard blackjack. The difference is that in multiple action blackjack, you get to play three rounds of blackjack with a single hand. And the dealer has the same up-card for…
One of the best explanations I’ve ever read about probability and the house edge used marbles to illustrate some important points. I’m going to use this post to explain how different colored marbles could be used to create a simple casino game. It’s also a great illustration of how probability and the house edge works. I’ll cover several important concepts in this post and draw analogies between marble games and gambling. A Hypothetical Casino Game Using Different Colored Marbles Let’s suppose you’re running a low-rent local underground casino, and you need to come up with a cheap game. You buy…
Las Vegas is still the most popular destination for gamblers. But Sin City isn’t just for gamblers anymore. The city has worked hard to make it the entertainment capital of the world while maintaining its standing in the gambling community. It doesn’t matter if you’re traveling to Las Vegas for the gambling or the entertainment or both; you want to avoid making too many mistakes on your trip. Here’s a list of the top seven mistakes that Las Vegas visitors make every day that you should avoid. 1 – Don’t Drink Enough Water It’s easy to forget that you’re in…
Gambling in a Las Vegas casino inherently involves losing over the long run, thanks to carefully tailored probabilities and payout odds designed to provide the house with a statistical edge. Making a visit to Las Vegas and dropping a few bucks taking on the house is simply the price we gamblers pay for entertainment and enjoyment. It might not always return a profit, but the time we spend grinding is worthwhile for several reasons. Some gamblers enjoy the mental challenges and competitive nature that skill games provide. Others are just looking to let loose in hopes that lightning strikes. And…
