This past weekend, Amanda Nunes proved she is one of the greatest mixed martial artists of all-time with an incredible 1st-round submission over Megan Anderson. She seems unstoppable, yet new challengers are constantly being presented. New reports claim that the UFC is now interested in booking Nunes vs. Pena.
Julianna Pena has been calling Nunes out for months. She seems confident in her ability to defeat the pound-for-pound best in the sport. Now is a great time to talk about how this bout might play out.
Let’s get into it!
Amanda Nunes is Heading Towards #1 Pound-For-Pound Status
MMA fans love to debate who the best fighter in the sport is. It’s an almost useless argument, though. It is completely subjective and there is no real way of determining who the true best fighter in MMA is.
There are some that believe Amanda Nunes should be considered the sport’s pound-for-pound best. She has gone undefeated since 2015 and is one of the few fighters to ever hold and defend two different world titles simultaneously. The way she wins fights is nothing short of dominant.
This past Saturday, “The Lioness” took on number-one contender Megan Anderson in a defense of her featherweight title. All online sports betting sites had her listed as the massive favorite heading into fight night. Some, however, felt that Anderson’s size advantage and power could lead to an upset.
Nunes wanted to make a statement. She immediately landed massive punches that hurt the challenger. She then earned the top position on the ground and quickly secured a triangle/armbar to get the tap just over two minutes into the first round.
Amanda looked like she didn’t break a sweat in this fight. There are now fans around the world trying to debate who could possibly give the double-champ any trouble inside the cage. This is proving to be significantly more difficult than some might imagine.
There are still some fighters that Amanda has yet to face. It appears the UFC is now pushing to get her back in the cage as soon as possible.
Expect to See Nunes vs. Pena Taking Place Sometime Soon
Amanda Nunes is coming off one of her best performances of all-time. She may not have too much time to sit back and relax, though. Several fighters across bantamweight and featherweight are still pushing to earn a crack at her.
UFC President Dana White seems to have a next opponent for Amanda in mind. Some are unsurprised to hear this next opponent. White claims that he is looking to book Julianna Pena into the next bantamweight title fight against Nunes.
Pena has been a top-contender at bantamweight for years. She’s coming off an impressive submission win over Sara McMann in her most recent bout. White believes she makes the most sense to challenge the double-champ next.
“She’s [Amanda Nunes] incredible. She’s incredible and she goes in there and she made it look easy tonight against a really tough girl who hits hard and who came to win. So it couldn’t happen to a better human being, she’s one of the sweetest people on earth, and I’m really happy for her and we’re talking about turning her around quick here for the 135lbs title since tonight was an easy night for her. So we’ll see how it goes,” he said. “Julianna Pena’s been texting all of us all night. She’s been busy tonight. Yeah, we could do that.”
Nunes will almost surely come into this fight as a massive betting favorite. Pena is just 2-2 in her past four bouts and has only competed a few times over the past three years. She’s confident, though, and seems to feel she has an answer to finally defeat Amanda.
Nothing has been made official yet. We’ll be sure to offer more information on this fight being booked over the next few weeks!
Is it Finally Time to Book the Nunes vs. Shevchenko Trilogy?
There aren’t many fighters in the UFC able to compete against Amanda Nunes. She is steamrolling just about every single woman she is matched up against. There are even some that feel it’s time for her to begin facing off with men.
This will never happen for obvious reasons. Fights like the Nunes vs. Pena one may still generate fan interest. It may not be long before she completely clears out both the bantamweight and featherweight titles, though.
There is one name that continues to come up. That is Valentina Shevchenko, the current flyweight champion of the UFC. She has faced off against Nunes twice and both fights were extremely close.
Valentina has looked unstoppable at 125 pounds. She’s been dominating every opponent aside from Amanda Nunes. There are now many fans that believe the trilogy fight between her and Amanda may prove to be the most competitive fight in women’s MMA right now. Of course, she first needs to get past Jessica Andrade in an exciting title fight on April 24.
There are many directions that UFC can go right now. It’s an exciting time for MMA fans around the world.
