Gennady Golovkin remains one of the very best middleweight boxers in the world. He’s 39 years old now and has competed just once over the past year. This week, Matchroom Boxing CEO Eddie Hearn told the media that Golovkin vs. Andrade is being targeted for this summer.
Demetrius Andrade is another elite middleweight titleholder. A fight with Gennady would be a massive bout for fans around the world. Today, we’ll talk about what could lead to this coming together.
Let’s get into it!
Who is the Best Middleweight Boxer Right Now?
There are some massive boxing matches being scheduled right now. Every single weight division in the sport is loaded with talent. Promoters are doing what they can to make the biggest fights possible.
Fans around the world continue to debate who the best middleweight in the sport is. With Canelo Alvarez now competing at super-middleweight, the debate is fiercer than ever. Several men deserve consideration.
Gennady Golovkin is one option. He’s 41-1-1 as a professional with his only loss coming against the aforementioned Canelo. He’s won three-straight fights since then and seems to be in fantastic shape even at nearly 40 years old. “GGG” comes into almost every fight he takes as the favorite by online sports betting sites.
Demetrius Andrade is another name in the mix. The 30-0 fighter from Rhode Island holds the WBO middleweight title and has already defended it on four separate occasions. Andrade seems to be in the prime of his career and is looking for the biggest fights possible right now.
Most agree that these two men sit at the top of the middleweight rankings. There are many now pushing to see these two men compete in the ring. As most fans are aware, however, it’s never easy getting champions to compete against one another.
Eddie Hearn is one man pushing to get this fight signed. If the promoter has his way, they will finally compete this summer.
Here’s What Could Lead to Golovkin vs. Andrade Coming Together
Gennady Golovkin is one of the most accomplished boxers of his generation. He famously went 345-5 as an amateur and was never knocked down. He’s since gone on to have one of the best professional careers in the history of the middleweight division.
Time eventually catches every fighter. At 39, it seems likely that “GGG’s” time in the sport is winding down. He’s looking for big fights right now and wants to end his storied career with wins over elite competition.
Eddie Hearn is currently signed as Golovkin’s promoter. This week, the Matchroom Boxing CEO spoke to the media about what should come next for the Ukrainian knockout artist.
“If I’m Gennadiy Golovkin or I’m Jermall Charlo I’m looking at [Andrade] and going, ‘I can beat him.’ So, why not step up?” Hearn said. “Gennadiy Golovkin, a great champion, you know, he’s planning a fight with Murata on December the 31st. We’re in April. Gennadiy Golovkin should be looking and speaking to DAZN and us and saying, ‘I’ll fight Demetrius Andrade in the summer and then I’ll fight Murata in Japan.’ Two massive unification fights.”
This is exciting news for fans to hear. Golovkin vs. Andrade is without a doubt one of the biggest fights that can be made in the middleweight division. Hearn clearly feels that the champions in this weight class now need to face off against one another.
Nothing has been made official yet. Andrade is coming off an impressive win last weekend and Gennady has yet to announce his next opponent. Stay tuned for updates!
Is Jake Paul Taking Over Boxing?
The sport of boxing is in an unusual position. Many of the best fighters in the sport are unable to capture public interest. There aren’t many true draws left in boxing and promoters are doing their best to help fighters break into the mainstream.
Interestingly, Jake Paul has turned into one of the most-talked-about boxers in the world. He’s now 3-0 as a professional. Most recently, he scored a first-round knockout over former MMA champion Ben Askren in the main event of Triller’s April 17 event.
Many are now wondering who is next for the brash young YouTube star. Jake is a decent enough boxer yet seems uninterested in taking on any fellow boxers. Instead, he’s challenging undersized MMA fighters known for their grappling skills.
Jake’s move into the boxing world shows just how powerful a strong social media following can be. He has become a major talking point in the combat sports world. Many will tune in to see him lose inside the ring.
Hardcore fans of boxing don’t seem interested in Paul’s move into the sport. Instead, they’re focusing on some of the real fights that can be made over the next eight months. Hopefully, these fans are treated to big super-fights such as Golovkin vs. Andrade.
