Attorney General Bill Barr was in the news again on Tuesday. President Trump’s embattled AG made headlines when he told the Associated Press that the US Justice Department has uncovered no evidence of widespread voter fraud capable of overturning the results of last month’s presidential election.

Barr’s comments come in light of the president’s continued insistence that his election defeat at the hands of president-elect Joe Biden occurred because of massive fraud that tipped the scales against him. Trump has taken to Twitter on countless occasions to spout wild accusations about a rigged electoral system despite having brought forth no actual evidence to support his claims.

Barr Denies Voter Fraud Claims

Barr’s comments are noteworthy considering he has not often crossed Trump in public. The Attorney General has been one of Trump’s most staunch supporters since he was appointed to the post last year. Barr told the AP that US attorneys and FBI agents have worked to try and corroborate some of Trump’s election fraud claims, but

“To date, we have not seen fraud on a scale that could have effected a different outcome in the election.”

Trump attorneys immediately fired back at Barr’s claims, which come as a bit of a surprise considering Barr had previously echoed Trump’s concerns about the potential for voter fraud in the election. Barr had said in the past that mail-in voting could be vulnerable to fraud.

Unless Trump and his legal team unearth massive amounts of evidence that verify his claims very soon, he will be leaving the White House in less than two months. Biden will be sworn in as the 46th president at noon on January 20. Obviously, a new administration means Barr will be leaving his current post when Trump’s term officially comes to an end.

Unless, of course, Trump decides to fire him before Inauguration Day. The president has not been shy about ousting people from his administration over the course of his four years in office, especially if he no longer has any political use for them. While Barr has been quite helpful to Trump on numerous fronts since replacing former AG Jeff Sessions, we know the president isn’t a particularly loyal type.

Barr May Be Fired on Twitter

Just a couple of weeks ago, Trump took to his favorite social media platform to fire Chris Krebs, who had been serving as the Director of Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency in the Department of Homeland Security. Trump fired Krebs shortly after Krebs had gone out of his way to publicly debunk Trump’s claims of rampant election fraud:

Krebs’ dismissal was just the latest in a series of Twitter firings we have seen from Trump over the years. In the past, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, VA Secretary David Shulkin, White House counsel Don McGahn, and FBI Director James Comey were all fired via Trump tweet.

While Barr may have drawn Trump’s ire with his comments about the lack of election fraud, Barr also told the AP that he has named US Attorney John Durham as a special counsel. Durham now has the authority to investigate the beginnings of the Robert Mueller probe into Russia’s interference in the 2016 election. Trump has repeatedly denied that he actively sought Russia’s help during his victory in 2016 while claiming that the Mueller investigation was corrupt.

Trump may approve of Barr’s decision to appoint Durham as a special counsel, but his investigation is unlikely to turn up any evidence of “deep state” wrongdoing that would help Trump politically. It’s not clear at this point whether Barr’s appointment of Durham will be enough to save his job.

Regardless, any firing at this point of the administration would be more symbolic than anything else with Inauguration Day not far off. President-elect Biden will likely name Barr’s successor in the coming days.
