Last week, news broke that Khamzat Chimaev was forced out of his fight against Leon Edwards for the third time. Rather than re-book this contest, the UFC began scrambling to find Edwards a new opponent. It appears they’ve settled on Belal Muhammad. Now, odds on Edwards vs. Muhammad are being offered online!
This is an exciting clash of styles. Both these men are strikers and are looking for a big statement win to move up the welterweight rankings. Today, we’ll break down the betting odds for each fighter to win.
Let’s check it out!
It’s a Race to the Title for All UFC Welterweights Right Now
The UFC’s welterweight title is one of the most prestigious in all of MMA. For years, George St. Pierre ruled over this division and made it one of the most fan-friendly in sports. After GSP’s departure, the welterweight title changed hands on several occasions.
Kamaru Usman captured the belt in 2019 and has dominated the weight class ever since. Last weekend, he took on Gilbert Burns in a fight many felt he could lose. The vast majority of online sportsbooks still listed Kamaru as the betting favorite, though.
The oddsmakers ended up being correct. After an early scare, Usman began taking over with pinpoint jabs. In the third round, he dropped the challenger and earned a knockout victory on the ground to defend his title.
Every welterweight is now rushing to earn the next title shot. It appears as if Jorge Masvidal will be given another crack at the belt next. That leaves the door open for several other men to get a shot at the winner of that bout.
Leon Edwards is likely just one win away from securing a championship opportunity. He is riding an eight-fight win streak right now and has the skills to give any man at 170 pounds trouble. Fortunately, Leon has an opponent to face in the near future.
It’s been a long road back to the Octagon for the Birmingham striker. Fans are now busy predicting how his upcoming bout will play out.
Breaking Down the Odds on Edwards vs. Muhammad
Moving up the welterweight rankings isn’t easy. This may be the most competitive weight division in MMA and Kamaru Usman has established himself as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the sport. Leon Edwards has done nothing but win here and will finally step back into the cage on March 13.
Unfortunately, he won’t be competing against Khamzat Chimaev. Leon Edwards will instead be taking on Belal Muhammad, a fellow welterweight striker on an impressive win streak. It’s not the fight most expected, yet it should prove to be an extremely exciting clash.
BetOnline is already offering online betting odds for this bout! Fans around the world are now busy trying to predict how this bout will play out. Both men have somewhat similar styles, yet the odds clearly favor one man.
Leon Edwards is currently listed as the -275 favorite. He is considered by many to be one of the best 170-pound fighters in MMA right now. He’s faced a much higher level of competition over the years and has a crisper, more dangerous striking arsenal.
Belal “Remember the Name” Muhammad has only lost once since 2017. He’s currently riding a four-fight win streak including a victory over Dhiego Lima last weekend. Belal enters this bout as the +235 underdog, yet has been much more active lately and could end up pulling off the massive upset.
These odds on Edwards vs. Muhammad could change slightly as the fight draws closer. Stay tuned for a more in-depth betting breakdown of this fight card in the near future!
Usman Comes in as Massive Favorite Over Masvidal
As we already mentioned, Kamaru Usman has established himself as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the sport of MMA. He showed an elite striking game over Gilbert Burns and it’s now unclear if any man can beat him at welterweight.
After his win over Burns, Usman challenged Jorge Masvidal. It was somewhat unusual, as Kamaru already defeated Masvidal back in July of 2020. This was a fight that Jorge took on just a few day’s notice, however, and some fans wonder if things would play out differently with a full training camp.
“He knows he can’t beat me,” Usman said during an ESPN interview. “There are certain guys you just know, ‘I can’t beat that dude.’ He just doesn’t have the skills to beat me. Now, can a freak accident happen on any given day? Absolutely. But 10 times out of 10, I beat him badly, which is why I looked at him. It’s my show. I pick who I fight. At this point, I just didn’t like all the circumstances I had to deal with going into [the first fight with Masvidal], and it left a sour taste in my mouth. The s— they’ve talked has left a sour taste in my mouth. I need to put him in the ground for good.”
Odds on this bout are now being offered, too. Kamaru Usman comes in as the massive -310 favorite. He dominated the first fight against Jorge Masvidal and seems to have improved massively since that time.
Jorge Masvidal is one of the most dangerous strikers in MMA. If he can improve his takedown defense, there’s a chance that he can defeat Kamaru Usman. The oddsmakers aren’t giving him much of a chance at +260, though.
