Back in November, Luis Ortiz proved he’s still an elite heavyweight with a 1st-round knockout over Alexander Flores. Dillian Whyte is coming off a knockout loss to Alexander Povetkin back in August. Many analysts now believe that Ortiz vs. Whyte is the perfect fight to make in the heavyweight division.
Both of these men are in desperate need of a big win right now. A victory over the other man would help to catapult one of them back into a huge fight against one of the division’s stars. Today, we’ll talk about what needs to happen for this bout to come together.
Let’s get into it!
The Top Heavyweight Debate Continues to Take Place
The heavyweight division in boxing has long been the most-talked-about weight class in the sport. Fighters like Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson, and Lennox Lewis helped to make the sport what it is today. The fact is that most fans want to see the big men compete with each other.
Nowadays, many of the best heavyweight boxers alive hail from the UK. Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury are both elite fighters with major titles to their names. Most fans agree they are the best heavyweight boxers right now.
The true debate is over which of these men is better. For a time, the answer seemed clear. After Joshua’s loss to Andy Ruiz in 2019, many felt he was no longer at the top of the sport. He’s gone 2-0 since that time including a fantastic win over Kubrat Pulev this past weekend. It wasn’t much of a surprise considering that Joshua was the massive favorite by nearly all online sports betting sites, yet the win itself was incredible.
Tyson Fury saw his stock go up after a 2019 win over Deontay Wilder. It was the way he won, by pressuring Wilder from start to finish, that was so impressive. It’s not hard to see why so many feel that he is the best fighter in the game.
Everyone wants to see these two men compete. Unfortunately, getting the best heavyweights to fight each other in boxing is never easy. Negotiations seem to be underway for a fight between these men and hope is that they finally square off sometime in 2021.
In the meantime, some of the heavyweight division’s top contenders will be clawing their way back to a title fight. There is one of these contender fights that many fans are now getting behind.
Here’s What Could Lead to Ortiz vs. Whyte Early Next Year
Luis Ortiz was thought to be one of the boogeymen of the heavyweight division for many years. The Cuban amassed a 28-0 record before taking on Deontay Wilder for the first time. He put up a good fight, yet Wilder ended up getting the TKO finish in round 10. They competed in a rematch in 2019 and Wilder won once again with a devastating knockout.
Aside from those losses, Ortiz has been perfect in the ring. He returned from a year-long layoff against Alexander Flores in November and earned a knockout in the first round. It’s clear that he is here to stay.
Recently, UK heavyweight Dillian Whyte sent an open challenge to Luis Ortiz. It didn’t take long for the Cuban to accept his challenge. Boxing fans around the world are now hoping to see Ortiz vs. Whyte sometime in early 2021.
Jay Jimenez, Ortiz’s manager, spoke about this fight to the media this week.
“I guess Dillian was calling his name and other names, and he reached to me and asked me, ‘Look, if that’s true, I would like to step in the ring with him,” he said. “That would be a great fight. I told him that I would find out. I think, yeah, that would be a great fight. If that’s possible, yes, we’ll go wherever the money is at. That would be a big fight.”
It’s exciting to hear. Ortiz and Whyte have never managed to crack into the level of superstardom that fighters like Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury have. That could change, however, if one of them wins in impressive fashion.
Nothing has been made official yet. Boxing has a way of taking its time with these kinds of things. We will continue offering updates on this possible fight over the next few weeks!
What’s Going on With Joshua-Fury?
Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury aren’t new to the sport of boxing. Both have been at the elite level for years. Unfortunately, fans have never gotten to see them compete against one another. Perhaps that’s a blessing in disguise.
These two men have done nothing but win during their professional bouts. Many feel that a fight between them could end up being the biggest in UK history. 2021 seems like the perfect time to make this fight happen.
As we mentioned earlier, these two fighters are now in negotiations with one another. Many fans are now flocking to different sites to place their bets on the outcome. Some are surprised to see that Fury comes in as the betting favorite.
That’s according to Bovada, one of the top online sportsbooks in the US. At the moment, this site lists Tyson as the -185 favorite to get the win. Joshua enters as the +150 underdog. These odds could change as the fight draws closer.
There are some massive fights scheduled to take place in the heavyweight division. That includes Ortiz vs. Whyte. If all goes according to plan, 2021 will be the year that we get to see these massive bouts take place.
