The welterweight division in boxing is fantastic right now. Many believe that Terence Crawford is the best fighter at 147 pounds, yet very few men seem willing to face him. This week, however, former champion Shawn Porter offered to step in as the next opponent for Terence Crawford.
Porter has a reputation for being willing to face anyone, at any time. He would prove to be a fantastic test for “Bud.” Now is a great time to discuss how this massive clash might come together.
Here’s what you need to know!
Fans Continue to Call for Crawford vs. Spence
Boxing is filled with world-class champions right now. Every single weight division offers something special for fans. The main issue with the sport seems to be getting the very best fighters in the sport to compete with each other.
This isn’t necessarily a new issue. Fans have been complaining about the inability to put on the biggest-possible fights for many years. It seems to have gotten worse recently, however, particularly in the sport’s welterweight division.
Almost everyone agrees that Terence Crawford and Errol Spence Jr. are the two best welterweight fighters alive right now. Both men are undefeated in their professional careers. Both also hold major world championships.
Fans have been calling for these two men to compete against one another for many years. For one reason or another, it has failed to come together. Money seems to be the primary issue, and Crawford claims that Spence is negotiating himself out of the fight.
The main hope is that this fight comes together sometime in 2021. It’s far from a guarantee, though. We’ve seen many super fights like this one fail to ever materialize in the past. The sport is often simply too disorganized for these things to work out.
Crawford and Spence have no intention of hanging up the gloves anytime soon. Some are now looking ahead at possible opponents for them next year.
Will We See Shawn Porter as the Next Opponent for Terence Crawford?
To become a champion in boxing’s welterweight division is an extremely challenging feat. To retain the belt for an extended period of time is even more incredible. Terence Crawford won the WBO welterweight belt in June of 2018 and has already defended the title on four different occasions.
For now, the matchup against Errol Spence Jr. seems out of the question. There are still some fantastic contenders on the horizon for him including former multiple-time champ, Shawn Porter. This week, Porter spoke to the media and claimed he’s willing to take a fight against the pound-for-pound welterweight king.
“I’m like, ‘Damn, man, all right. I’ll fight him. If nobody will, I’ll fight him.’ You know?” Shawn said. “With me, it’s 100-percent the competitive spirit that I have and the willingness to fight someone who a lot of people feel he’s feared, and a lot of people don’t want to fight him. Really, the only thing stopping me, preventing me from fighting Terence Crawford, is the fact that he and I both haven’t said yes. If he’s willing to say yes, the fight will happen.”
This isn’t the fight fans will be cheering in the streets for. It’s a fun clash of styles, however, and it’s easy to see how Porter could give Crawford trouble. As of today, we haven’t heard Terence Crawford respond to Shawn Porters’ recent comments.
Shawn might be the best option to be the next opponent for Terence Crawford. He looked a little rusty early on in his most recent bout against Kell Brook. Terence will have a chance to move back towards the sport’s number-one pound-for-pound ranking with a win over a fighter like Shawn Porter.
Fights like this one are why boxing remains a great sport. Of course, the fights like the upcoming one between Floyd Mayweather and Logan Paul are what bring in the big money.
More Prop Bets on Mayweather vs. Paul Are Becoming Available!
Speaking of the welterweight division, Floyd Mayweather is one of the most successful fighters to ever compete in this weight class. He had an incredible run as champion, ending his professional career with a 50-0 record. He’s remained in the spotlight by taking the occasional exhibition match against high-profile opponents.
High-profile doesn’t necessarily mean highly-skilled. In February, Floyd Mayweather will be taking on YouTube star Logan Paul in an open weight exhibition match. It’s a fight that is guaranteed to bring in viewers from around the world.
BetOnline, one of the most popular US boxing betting sites available right now, is offering some fun prop bets for this matchup. One of these is which of these men ends up bleeding first. It shouldn’t be a shock to see Logan Paul as the more-likely option here with current odds of -500.
Another prop wager is whether or not this fight ends up going the distance. It’s an exhibition, yet based on the words being said, these men seem ready to earn a knockout win. The odds are set at +200 that the fight hits the final bell. Odds of -300 stand for one of these men to earn a stoppage before the last round ends.
Feel free to check out BetOnline today. There are a huge number of great odds available for upcoming bouts. If Shawn Porter is announced as the next opponent for Terence Crawford, we’ll see odds for this matchup become available here, too.
