Spain’s Directorate General for the Regulation of Gaming (DGOJ) published a new report called Analysis of the Online Gambler Profile 2021, in which officials indicated, among other highlights, that the Spanish online consumer spent an average of €523 – about $534 – during the whole of last year. This represents a 2% drop compared to the €534 recorded in 2020. The regulator also issued an update of its 2021 annual gaming market report, with slight variations from its first version.

According to the report on the Spanish online gambler, the average net expenditure per active player in Spain is €43.58 per month and €10.06 per week, based on a total of €523. “This average expenditure is calculated from the set of players who play online, not the general adult population,” authorities detailed.

The report also shows that the number of deposits increased from €2,271 million ($2,319 million) in 2020 to €2,764 million ($2,823 million) in 2021, “which represented an increase of 23.03%.”

Officials added that the number of transactions increased by 24.90% in that period, with card payments being the most commonly used means of payment for making deposits, representing 72.85%, followed by the e-wallet, with 17.9%.

Regarding age ranges, the DGOJ pointed out that “the highest average net expenditure is €837 per year among players between 36 and 45 years of age.” The lowest average expenditure is €202 per year, “which corresponds to players between 18 and 25 years of age.”

The report also stated that the number of active players is 1,470,303, which “represents an annual decrease of 0.6%” compared to 2020. Out of that figure, 84.52% of the active players are between 18 and 45 years of age.

Officials also claim that of the total number of active players, “82.73% of the players are men and 17.27% are women.” Based on this figure, they stated that the average annual net expenditure made by men was €583 per year, and that of women was €234 per year.

The report also detailed that, just as in 2020, online sports betting “is the vertical in which the largest number of people participate”, with 1,136,399 players and an annual variation rate of 8.76%.

This is followed by online casino, with 656,626 players and an annual variation of 2.37%; poker, with 335,712 players and an annual variation of -24.25%; and bingo, with 101,754 players in 2021.

Lastly, the report indicates that “the majority of players, 59.54%, played only one category,” out of which 43.64% played only sports betting, 8.17% played only online casino, 6.39% played poker, and 1.34% played only online bingo.

Updated annual report

The DGOJ also issued an update of its annual state online gambling market report for 2021. According to the new figures, gross gaming revenue (GGR) was €815.20 million, an amount slightly lower than the €815.30 million recorded in the first edition of the report.

The analysis of the GGR by gaming segments shows that the €815.20 million was divided as follows: €407.3 million in casino games (48.2% of the total); €333.6 million in sports betting (39.5%); €14.5 million in bingo (1.71%); €1.2 million in lotteries (0.14%); and €87.8 million in other games (10.4%).
