Boxing’s welterweight division is now filled with elite-level talent. Unfortunately, getting the best fighters to compete in this weight class hasn’t been easy. According to new reports, Terence Crawford and Top Rank may soon be parting ways for that exact reason.
Crawford is looking for the biggest fights possible. Signing with a different promoter may help him achieve that goal. Today, we’ll talk about what might be next for one of boxing’s best pound-for-pound fighters.
Let’s get into it!
Boxing’s Welterweight Division is Stacked Right Now
Every single weight class in boxing features world-class talent right now. There are top pound-for-pound fighters competing at lightweight, welterweight, middleweight, and heavyweight. It’s a great time to be a fan of the sport.
Most agree that welterweight is the best division in the sport. That’s certainly hard to deny when you look at the fighters competing at 147 pounds. Fans love debating which fighter at welterweight is actually the best.
The main debate seems to be over whether Terence Crawford or Errol Spence Jr. is better. Both of these men are undefeated as professionals. They’re both extremely talented and have a knack for finishing fights before the final bell.
Spence hasn’t fought since a horrific car accident in October of 2019. Incredibly, he wasn’t seriously injured. Some still question how this long layoff could affect him against top competition.
Terence Crawford hasn’t fought in a while, as well. Most recently, he defeated Egidijus Kavaliauskas via 9th-round TKO.
Both Spence and Crawford are scheduled to compete again in the near future. Most US online sports betting sites list them both as major favorites against their opponents. Interestingly, new reports claim there may be potential for these two to fight sometime next year.
Here’s Why Terence Crawford and Top Rank Could Soon Split
There are many issues that plague the sport of boxing. Most agree it’s the inability to get the best fighters to compete against one another. Much of this is due to the fact that the best fighters are signed with different promotional companies.
Getting these promotions to partner up is never easy. For that reason, you often see fighters competing with others under the same promotional umbrella. It’s a tale as old as time and one that many boxers are getting fed up with.
You can add Terence Crawford to that list. This week, reports surfaced claiming Terence Crawford and Top Rank could soon part ways. Crawford has repeatedly expressed frustration that he cannot face other champions in the weight class.
Not long ago, Terence was asked about the possibility of leaving his promoters once his contract expires in a couple of months.
“It’s all about business, that’s what it comes down to. Probably like a few months, few months, it ain’t that long,” he said. I feel like I’ve already put my stamp down in the history books and my legacy will live on no matter what, if I get those big fights or not. Given all those things that I’ve accomplished in the sport of boxing as a whole. Do I want those fights that everybody calling for…yes, I’ve been calling for those fights before I was even 147.”
Crawford could face the likes of Errol Spence Jr., Manny Pacquiao, and Keith Thurman if he decides to switch promoters. It’s no surprise that so many fans are hoping that’s what takes place. We’ll continue offering updates over the next few months!
