Quick Recap of the First Povetkin vs Whyte Fight

The first bout between these two took place on August 22nd, 2020, in Whyte’s home country of the UK. As mentioned, it was for the interim WBC heavyweight title and a big step towards a title fight against Tyson Fury who holds the full WBC title.

Whyte was the favorite with online betting sites, pundits and fans. He came out looking good in the early rounds. In fact, he had Povetkin in trouble in round 4 when he knocked the Russian down twice.

When they first fought, Dillian Whyte put Alexander Povetkin down twice in the 4th round.

Then came the 5th.

Yet, Povetkin was able to get back up both times and shake it off. The 5th round started with many thinking that Whyte would put away Povetkin and win the fight.

However, a left uppercut not only proved them all wrong, but it also flattened Whyte as he laid knocked out on the mat. It was an impressive and surprising ending to an entertaining contest.

Whyte Believes he Will Win This Fight

If you listen to all of the talking being done by Whyte, you would’ve thought that he actually won the first fight. But, that’s not the case.

Yet, that hasn’t dampened Whyte’s confidence at all. In fact, he believes that when he knocks Povetkin down in this fight, Alexander will stay down:

“Last time I didn’t land properly and he went down, but he showed resilience by getting up and then he stopped me. This time when I hit him he’ll stay down. I’m a very adaptable kind of guy, I’ll do what I need to do to get the win. I don’t care if I’ve got to rough a guy up or outbox them. I’ll do whatever it takes for me to win. It’s the biggest fight of my career. I’m coming off a loss to the guy. The good thing is this is heavyweight boxing. One fight changes everything.”

I like what I’m seeing from Whyte in regards to his approach to this rematch. He understand just how important it is. Furthermore, he recognizes and acknowledges the gravity of this fight is for his career.

Whyte had won 11 straight bouts between the only two losses of his career. In addition to the loss to Povetkin last summer, he also suffered a defeat against Anthony Joshua in late 2015.

Can Povetkin Win Again?

Povetkin is a tough out for anyone. He’s rugged, smart and has the power to knockout his opponents. Like Whyte, he also lost to Anthony Joshua. That fight took place in the fall of 2018. However, he’s on a three fight win streak right now.

Prior to knocking out Whyte, Alexander beat Hughie Fury via unanimous decision and Michael Hunter via split decision. Speaking of Hunter, he is predicting another victory for Povetkin over Whyte:

“Povetkin always gets to his man at some point and Dillian Whyte always gets hit at some point in all of his fights, so I think it’s going to be a very similar outcome. It could go either way, but I just think the experience [of Povetkin] is going to outweigh Whyte’s youth and skills. … I think the same thing could happen. He could get knocked out.”

Povetkin has 25KOs in his career and a 64.1% knockout rate. At 41 years old, he’s still very dangerous when it comes to putting opponents to sleep. Can he do it to Whyte again?

Who Leaves Gibraltar as the Champ?

I must admit, I was very surprised that Povetkin put Whyte to sleep in their first fight. I didn’t see that coming. Yet, when you look at this matchup on paper, it still favors Whyte. He has the height, reach, athletic, and youth advantages.

I appreciate what Povetkin did in their fight and what he continues to do as a veteran of the sport, but I feel that Whyte is going to get his revenge in this contest. Dillian just needs to stick to the game plan and not leave his chin exposed for Povetkin to knock it off.

The Over/Under is an interesting play as well. I can see this bout going Over 7.5 rounds as both men got a taste for each other’s power in the first fight. I doubt they will be so brazen to get into a firefight as early in this rematch as they did in the first bout. For this rematch, I’m taking Whyte to get his revenge with a late round TKO victory. Whyte’s odds for a TKO/KO win are -150.
