April is going to be an exciting month for Bellator with several big events that include world title fights, multiple Grand Prix bouts, and some of the promotion’s top stars.

However, before for the company returns to action for the first time in 2021, Bellator already made history by releasing the promotion’s first ever fighter rankings.

Although it’s not ground breaking in the sport of MMA, this is exciting for a promotion that continues to evolve and entertain fight fans.

These rankings are tabulated by a 17-member panel comprised of selected media members. Each division’s champ automatically takes the top spot.

Bellator President Scott Coker made the following comments about the inaugural fighter rankings:

“This is the greatest roster in the history of Bellator. As we continue to sign the top free agents in the sport and see the success of young prospects inside the Bellator cage, we felt that the time was right to introduce official fighter rankings. We are always looking at ways to improve our product and this adds a new and exciting aspect to the organization that will have a significant impact on how fans watch Bellator. Every division is competitive, every matchup is important, and we are set for several potential blockbusters as we begin a new year on Showtime.”

How Does the Voting Work?

As mentioned, the voting is tabulated from the panel of media members spanning some of the top MMA news sites. The tabulation of the votes is handled by Combat Registry.

Voting will be performed after every Bellator event no matter the frequency. All votes will be due on the Monday immediately following a live Bellator show.

Only fighters that meet the eligibility requirements can be voted on.

How Does a Fighter Become Eligible for the Rankings?

Bellator has a list of criteria that fighters need to meet in order to become eligible for ranking. Highlights of this criteria includes:

  • Fighters have to compete at least once and on a current term with the company.
  • Fighters can be ranked for up to 15 months without competing.
  • Fighters can be ranked in two different weight classes provided they have had at least one fight in each division.
  • A fighter has to compete in a division at least once in 15 months to remain in rankings. The exception to this rule is if they’re in a Grand Prix.
  • A medical or disciplinary suspension of longer than six months will result in a fighter being removed from the rankings.
