BetOnline’s Odds Boosts for September 1st

betonline’s-odds-boosts-for-september-1st

August was quite a month for bettors, and September promises to be even more action-packed with the NFL season set to get underway. We still have plenty of NBA, NHL, and Major League Baseball action to tide us over until football begins, though, and BetOnline has a fresh batch of odds boosts posted for Tuesday, September 1.

Are any of these boosts worth your attention? Let’s dive right in.

MLB: Reds, Cubs, and Phillies ALL to Win (+425)

Baseball has 13 games on Tuesday’s schedule. Sonny Gray and the Reds are sizable -160 home favorites over the St. Louis Cardinals. The Chicago Cubs, who will have Jon Lester on the mound, are -165 favorites on the road in Pittsburgh, while Aaron Nola and the Phillies are -150 favorites to take down the Nationals in Philadelphia.

Of the three, the team that gives me the most pause is the Cubs. Lester has name value, but in terms of actual skills, he’s a pitcher well past his prime. Lester has been knocked around a bit by the White Sox and Tigers in his last two starts. While the Pirates may well be the worst offense in all of baseball, Lester isn’t remotely close to either Gray or Nola at this point in terms of ace-caliber quality.

That said, the Cubs’ offense should have its way with a vulnerable right-hander in Chad Kuhl. Kuhl has wide platoon splits for his career, which means he struggles with lefties. The Cubs can throw as many as five quality lefties his way between Anthony Rizzo, Kyle Schwarber, Ian Happ, Jason Heyward, and Jason Kipnis. On Sunday, Schwarber, Happ, and Heyward became the first teammates in the same outfield to all hit multiple home runs in the same game when they accomplished the feat in Cincinnati.

While the Phillies have Nola on the mound, the team’s hitters will have to deal with another ace-type pitcher in Patrick Corbin. Corbin has been a lot more pedestrian than Nola has this season, but the Phillies being -150 favorites here is still a little bit surprising.

MLB: Dodgers and White Sox BOTH to Win (+200)

The Dodgers are -220 favorites with Julio Urias on the mound at home Tuesday night against Arizona at BetOnline.ag. The Diamondbacks were sellers at the deadline, shipping Starling Marte, Archie Bradley, Robbie Ray, and Andrew Chafin out of town on Monday. Urias hasn’t been in amazing form this season for the Dodgers, but this is the best team in baseball. It’s easy to understand why they’re so heavily favored.

The White Sox’ game is more of a toss-up. Chicago will be in Minnesota tonight to take on Michael Pineda and the Twins. Pineda hasn’t pitched in a game in a full calendar year after serving a lengthy PED suspension.

The right-hander has a history of being a quality starter in the past, but there’s no telling what he’ll do tonight. It wouldn’t be surprising to see him strike out nine over five shutout innings. On the flip side, the White Sox have enough power in the lineup to end his night early.

The White Sox will have Dallas Keuchel on the mound, and they’re only -107 favorites on the road. The Twins have one of the more potent offenses in baseball, but the lineup certainly doesn’t look as imposing against a lefty like Keuchel.

NHL: Flyers and Canucks BOTH to Win (+175)

The Flyers and Canucks will both try to stave off elimination tonight. The Islanders and Golden Knights both carry commanding 3-1 series leads into Tuesday’s games, and Philly and Vancouver are both betting underdogs. The Flyers are at +105 on the moneyline, while the Canucks are way down at +197.

Philadelphia had a better regular-season record than New York, but the Flyers have found very little success in their head-to-head games against the Isles. The Flyers went winless in three regular-season tries against New York, while they’ve dropped three of the first four games of this series.

The Canucks, meanwhile, split two regular-season showdowns with Vegas before losing three games in this series by a combined score of 13-5.

NBA: Celtics and Jazz BOTH to Win (+325)

The Celtics blew out the Raptors in Game 1 of their second-round series on Sunday, which isn’t a result many saw coming. While Boston is clearly a force to be reckoned with, the Raptors just aren’t a team that gets throttled very often. Nick Nurse has been one of the NBA’s best coaches in terms of making tactical adjustments on the fly, so it’ll be interesting to see what he has up his sleeve as Toronto tries to get back into the series tonight.

The Jazz and Nuggets will square off in Game 7 of their first-round series. Both teams have been throwing haymakers over the course of the first six games, and the story has clearly been the shootout between Utah’s Donovan Mitchell and Denver’s Jamal Murray. Both players have cracked 50 points in a game twice in the series already, and both are also shooting well over 50 percent from three-point range on pretty substantial volume.

The Celtics are 1.5-point underdogs and listed at +105 to win the game, per BetOnline’s odds. The Jazz are 1-point favorites over Denver, though the game is a virtual toss-up with both teams at -110 on the moneyline.

What’s The Best Bet?

I think we can go ahead and scratch the NHL odds boost off our list. The value on both underdogs to win isn’t that good at +175, and it seems pretty unlikely that both the Flyers and Canucks will be able to keep their respective series alive. At least one of them will go down tonight, which makes this one pretty easy to write off.

While you need three results to go your way, I think Cubs-Reds-Phillies all to win offers excellent value at +425. I certainly don’t trust Lester, but he’s pitching in a pitcher-friendly park against a miserable Pirates offense. Even he can succeed in that matchup, while I like Gray and Nola to hold up their ends of the bargain, too.

The other MLB boost at +200 hinges on the White Sox’ ability to find their footing against Pineda. I have no doubt the Dodgers can take care of business against the Diamondbacks, but I’m not confident enough in the White Sox to give you the go-ahead on that one.

I also think the Nuggets complete their comeback and oust the Jazz from the playoffs tonight. That said, I’m not so confident in Denver that I can fully ignore the +325 value here. Boston is fully capable of putting Toronto into an 0-2 hole. This isn’t the same Raptors team we saw last season without Kawhi Leonard, and the Raps are likely a bit overrated after easily sweeping the hapless Nets in the first round.

The best bet remains Cubs-Reds-Phillies at +425, but the Celtics and Jazz both to win at +325 is worth an honorable mention, too.
