The Brasil Futebol Expo, which described itself as the largest football event in Latin America, is set to put the sports betting market at the forefront of its new edition, exploring new sources of revenue from sponsorships. The BFExpo 22 is organized by the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), which in partnership with SBC will hold the Brasil Sports Betting Summit congress.

BFExpo 22 focuses on education, business, experiences and innovation, and is set to take place from September 4 to 8 at the PRO MAGNO event center in São Paulo. Within its program, the Brasil Sports Betting Summit, to be held September 6-7, will consist of two days of discussions on the process of regulating sports betting and the expansion of this market in the country, with the participation of Brazilian and international experts.

In a press release, the organization highlighted the importance of discussing issues related to sports betting, as 32 clubs from the Campeonato Brasileiro soccer league currently have some kind of sponsorship from sports betting platforms. Out of the 20 teams that compete in Série A, 19 are sponsored by companies linked to sportsbooks; while in Série B, 13 have commercial deals of this type in place.

Sports betting has been the subject of relevant debates due to its potential to generate income. Gambling has been legalized since 2018 through federal law 12,756, although regulation still needs to be approved and the deadline to do so expires in December 2022. By law, companies are authorized to operate in Brazil, but since it’s not a regulated activity, they are based abroad,” the authorities of the event summarized the current regulatory situation in Brazil.

This topic will be discussed in the panel “Sports Betting Regulation with a Focus on Latin America,” on Tuesday, September 6. At the panel, Deputy Undersecretary Alexandre Massa; Undersecretary for Special Affairs of the Secretariat for Economic Monitoring, Ministry of Economy Iuri Castro; Senior Executive Consultant of the Sports Betting Market, and Member of the Executive Committee of the Global Lottery Monitoring System (GLMS) Ludovico Calvi; the journalist specialized in lotteries and betting, editor of BNLData and president of the Instituto Brasileiro Jogo Legal (IJL) Magnho Jose; and partners of the GBSA law firm Rafael Rodrigo Bruno and Carlos Goncalves Junior will be present.

On September 7, the panel “Sports Betting Market in Brazil – Opportunities and Challenges for Football Clubs and Operators” will take place. It will be led by Martin Lycka, Entain‘s Senior Vice President for Americas Regulatory Affairs and a member of the board of directors of the American Gaming Association (AGA); representatives from the operator EstrelaBet; the executive director of Palmeira’s women’s team Alberto Simão; the VP of Marketing of the football club Santos Jorge Avancini; and the Commercial Director of the football club Botafogo Rodrigo Ganem.

Rasmus Sojmark, CEO and Founder of SBC, commented on the growth of the Brazilian market and the importance of creating these spaces for debate: “The sports betting market in Brazil is about to take a big step after many years of slow progress. We join BFExpo to create the right environment for industry professionals to discover what the country expects of them.”

Furthermore, Ludovico Calvi, who has over 30 years of experience in the market, explained: “We’ll discuss the entire betting life cycle, from its inception to the dynamics of a transparent operation and the strong commitment to integrity, responsible gaming, and social responsibility. The goal is to provide the public with all the information and strategic contributions based on the best global practices to manage a newly established sports betting organization.”

Rafael Bruno, GBSA partner, added: “It represents a moment to reflect on the Brazilian sports betting market. It’s necessary to find an efficient way to internalize this market in the national economic context.”

This will be the second edition of the BFExpo, and it will feature 200 speakers in 70 courses on the most diverse topics that involve football. In addition to the educational proposal, on the ground floor of the Pró Magno Centro de Eventos visitors will find booths from brands, clubs, and companies from the football world.

There will also be a gamer arena where attendees can play and where championships will be held. The entertainment space will also feature table football and the VAR simulator, among other activities.
