Oscar De La Hoya shocked the boxing world when he announced he is making a return to the sport. The 48-year-old has been quiet about who he might be competing against. This week, news broke that De La Hoya vs. Alvarez is being discussed as a possibility.

Eddie Alvarez is widely considered to be one of the best lightweight fighters in MMA history. He’s never competed as a professional boxer, though. Now is a great time to talk about his possible move over to the boxing world.

Let’s get into it!

2021 is the Year for Unusual Boxing Events

The sport of boxing has changed recently. Not long ago, it took years for a fighter to move up the rankings and become a big draw. Problems with the sport lingered, yet it truly seemed like there was a purity to seeing the best fighters compete against one another.

Lately, entertainment has become a significantly more important part of the sport. Celebrity boxing matches have reached new levels of popularity. Much of that can be attributed to the Paul brothers making the move into boxing.

Logan and Jake Paul have both taken part in several amateur and professional boxing events over the years. They have used their large followings to bring in millions of viewers to these bouts. Many hardcore fans of the sport have complained that they are taking away from the integrity of boxing.

This Saturday, Jake Paul will be competing in the ring once again against Ben Askren, a former MMA champion. There has been a tremendous amount of hype surrounding this fight. Many combat sports enthusiasts are hoping to see Ben end Jake’s fighting career.

This isn’t the only strange fight taking place this year. There have been several unusual matchups announced over the past few weeks. Even Oscar De La Hoya has recently announced that he is making a return to the sport!

Many have been asking who Oscar will be facing in his big comeback. We’re now beginning to hear about one possible scenario.

Could We See De La Hoya vs. Alvarez Taking Place This Year?

Oscar De La Hoya was one of the best fighters in the world during his run through the 90s and early 2000s. He recorded wins over a number of legendary fighters during his time in the sport. After a devastating loss to Manny Pacquiao in 2008, he announced his retirement from boxing.

De La Hoya didn’t completely stay away from the sport. He quickly moved into the promotion game and began signing big-name fighters. Even today, Oscar has some of the most popular fighters in the world signed to his promotional company.

It has been confirmed that Oscar is planning to make a return to boxing. No one really knows who he will be facing off against. This week, news broke that Eddie Alvarez is being considered as a possible opponent for the “Golden Boy.”

De La Hoya vs. Alvarez is a fun option. There have been many boxing vs. MMA contests taking place over the past few years. This would be another one that fans of both sports could get behind. Eddie spoke to the media about this possible fight today.

“There’s serious talks,” Alvarez said. “They’re serious like ‘wanting to get a deal done this week’ serious. That’d be a hell of a fight and I’ve got everyone here in Philadelphia backing me, and the whole Philadelphia boxing [community] to back me up. Getting in there to mix it up with that guy would be a dream come true. I actually think I’d do pretty damn good against him. I’d be crazy excited about that if them guys figure that out. I never get too excited until papers are in front of me and we have a bout agreement online and everybody’s happy with what’s on the paper. They tried to get some larger names, but the larger names either outbid themselves or were under contract.”

Nothing has been confirmed. It does seem as if Oscar De La Hoya and his team seem interested in taking on an MMA fighter. We’ll be sure to offer more updates on this situation over the next few weeks.

There’s Still Time to Bet on Paul vs. Askren Online

This Saturday’s bout between Jake Paul and Ben Askren has somehow become one of the most-talked-about combat sporting events thus far in 2021. Fans of boxing and MMA are both curious to see how this fight unfolds.

The curiosity surrounding this fight is getting more intense as it draws closer. Everyone seems to have their own opinion on how this bout will unfold. Many are heading over to BetOnline to make their wagers on it. With the fight just around the corner, these odds seem unlikely to change.

Jake Paul comes in as the -200 favorite. He clearly has some power in his hands. No one really knows how willing he is to engage in a firefight, though. Most feel that if Jake wins, it will be early on in the bout.

Ben Askren enters this fight as the +160 underdog. He’s never been known for his striking skills but seems supremely confident that he will get the victory over Jake Paul in this fight. As the fight drags on, Ben’s chances of winning seem to increase.

There are some great prop bets available on this fight, too. BetOnline is allowing its members to wager on things like what round a fight ends and how a fighter wins. Feel free to check out our full betting guide on this fight here!
