Jets Still Attracting Super Bowl Betting Interest Despite 0-6 Start

  • Jets still attracting minimal Super Bowl betting interest despite disastrous 0-6 start
  • Jets have failed to cover a spread in any game thus far
  • Odds on the Jets finishing the season 0-16 have moved from +1500 to +600

Through the first six weeks of the 2020 NFL season, 31 NFL teams have won at least one game. The lone exception, of course, is the New York Jets. With another incredibly dismal display on Sunday, the Jets fell to 0-6 on the season. New York was throttled 24-0 by the Miami Dolphins in a game that was never remotely competitive. Miami jumped out to a 21-0 halftime lead and never looked back.

Many Jets fans have called for the firing of head coach Adam Gase, who remains employed as of this writing. Gase now has a record of 7-15 since taking over as head coach prior to last season, but the team’s effort so far in 2020 has been highly questionable.

Veteran Joe Flacco has started back-to-back games at quarterback with Sam Darnold sidelined with a shoulder injury. Flacco, a former Super Bowl champion, has completed just over 51 percent of his passes for 397 yards through three total appearances.

Jets Still Attracting Super Bowl Betting Action

While the Jets appear primed for a last-place finish, there are still some bettors out there keeping hope alive in the team’s chances of turning things around. According to ESPN, one bettor placed a $40 wager on the Jets to win the Super Bowl this season at +50000 odds at the Westgate SuperBook in Las Vegas. MGM also reported a pair of single-figure wagers came in on the Jets to win it all. One bet was for $5, with the other for $2, both on +10000 odds.

Before the season began, one better at the SuperBook threw $500 on the Jets to win it all at +2000. MGM also reported three other wagers worth $100 apiece on New York to win the title this season.

While the Jets are still attracting some betting interest, the team has still generated fewer bets than any other team in football. MGM says the Jets have attracted the fewest number of bets and the least amount of money wagered to win Super Bowl 55.

Public Betting Heavily Against New York

DraftKings says that the Jets attracted only about 10 percent of the money on the spread before their aforementioned 24-0 loss to Miami on Sunday. Not only did the defeat drop the Jets to 0-6 on the year, but New York has still yet to even cover a point spread. Unbelievably, New York has failed to cover the spread by an average of 11.3 points per game through six games.

Jeff Stoneback, the director of race and sport for MGM Nevada, told ESPN,

“Every week, it’s the same thing. Unfortunately, we’re rooting for the Jets.”

Through six games, the Jets have been outscored 185-75 by their opponents. Buzz about the potential for an 0-16 season started to build after the team was beaten at home by the Broncos and third-string quarterback Brett Rypien, 37-28, back in Week 4.

Will Jets Go 0-16?

After that game, William Hill US posted the prop bet “Will the Jets go 0-16?” on their online sportsbook. “Yes” began at +1500, but the odds shifted all the way down to +600 prior to Sunday’s game in Miami. While the prop hasn’t yet generated a ton of interest, those that have wagered on it are banking on the Jets going winless. 98 percent of the bets and 98 percent of the money have come in on the “yes” side at plus-money odds.

The Jets will host the 4-1 Buffalo Bills on Sunday before hitting the road to face the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 8. A lot of things can happen between now and November 1, but one would imagine that Jets-Chiefs contest will have the biggest spread we’ve seen on an NFL game in quite some time.

New York has two games remaining against the Patriots, as well as games against the Chargers, Dolphins, Raiders, Seahawks, Rams, and Browns before the end of the campaign. Frank Gore led the Jets with 46 rushing yards on 11 attempts on Sunday in Miami in the team’s first game following the release of Le’Veon Bell. Bell signed with the Chiefs a day after leaving the Jets.
