  • Dustin Johnson, Jon Rahm listed as +1000 co-favorites to win the 2022 Masters
  • This year’s champion, Hideki Matsuyama, checks in at +2500
  • Tiger Woods listed at +4000 after missing 2021 Masters due to injury

On Sunday, Hideki Matsuyama staved off a late charge by Xander Schauffele and Will Zalatoris to win The Masters for the first time in his career. Matsuyama finished one shot over par in the final round, but he was ultimately able to finish a shot ahead of Zalatoris. It was the 29-year-old’s first major championship of his career, and he was able to close the deal after finishing the third round atop the leaderboard.

Dustin Johnson, who won The Masters in dominant fashion by shooting 20-under par last November, failed to miss the cut this time around. Johnson finished five over through two rounds this year, but he does check-in as the early co-favorite to win another green jacket in 2022.

Golf betting sites have already released early odds for next year’s tournament. Johnson and Jon Rahm are both listed as +1000 favorites, followed by Bryson DeChambeau (+1200), Jordan Spieth (+1200), Justin Thomas (+1400), and Schauffele (+1400). Matsuyama is down at +2500 after entering this year’s event as a +4800 long shot.

Zalatoris Makes a Run

Zalatoris is a 24-year-old Wake Forest product that took a second-place finish in his first-ever Masters start. Zalatoris shot two-under in the final round to give Matsuyama a sweat, and many on the PGA Tour believe this won’t be the last time we see his name near the top of The Masters leaderboard.

Zalatoris isn’t a full-time member of the Tour just yet, and he was able to play his way into last year’s US Open by doing well on the Korn Ferry Tour.

Zalatoris had posted 11 consecutive top-20 finishes on the PGA’s developmental circuit, and he followed that up with a respectable sixth-place finish at the US Open last year. His second-place finish at Augusta will earn him a spot in next year’s Masters field, as well.

Zalatoris came up just short in his quest to become the first player since Fuzzy Zoeller to win The Masters in his first attempt. Zoeller accomplished the feat in 1979, 42 years ago. Jordan Spieth, who is one of the favorites to win next year’s tournament, finished second place in his first Masters start back in 2014. Zalatoris is listed at +3300 to win his first green jacket next year.

Matsuyama’s Achievement

Matsuyama became the first Japanese player in history to win a Masters. He shot a seven-under 65 on moving day to rise to the top of the leaderboard, a round that included four birdies and an eagle on the back-nine. It was the first bogey-free round of the entire tournament, and it gave him a four-shot lead over Justin Rose, Marc Leishman, Schauffele, and Zalatoris entering Sunday’s final round.

Tiger Woods, who did not play this year after his February car accident, is listed at +4000 to win a sixth career green jacket in 2022.
