Khabib Nurmagomedov is widely considered to be one of the greatest mixed martial artists of all time. After going 29-0 as a professional, he announced his retirement from the sport. That doesn’t mean he’s staying away from MMA completely, though. This week, Khabib’s Olympic plans came to light.

Many fans have called for MMA to become an Olympic sport for years. It seems that Khabib Nurmagomedov is focused on making this a reality. Today, we’re going to talk about how this could happen.

Let’s get into it!

Dana White Continues to Claim Khabib Will Fight Again

Going undefeated in MMA is extremely difficult. Doing it at the highest level in the UFC is almost impossible. That’s exactly what Khabib Nurmagomedov managed to accomplish, though. He went 29-0 in his entire career and 16-0 inside the UFC.

Earlier this year, Khabib’s father and longtime head coach passed away. This was an extremely tough blow for the lightweight champion and some felt it could impact his time in the sport. After defeating Justin Gaethje back in October, Khabib shocked the world by announcing he was hanging up the gloves.

Not everyone feels that he is truly stepping away from MMA, though. News eventually came out that the UFC wasn’t stripping Khabib of his lightweight title. Reports also surfaced that Khabib was staying in the USADA testing pool.

Dana White added fuel to the non-retirement fire. He told the media that he expects Khabib Nurmagomedov to compete again sometime in the future. Khabib seems to be indicating that he won’t return, yet many believe he’s intentionally misleading the media.

Everyone wants to see Nurmagomedov fighting again. A rematch against Conor McGregor would be huge for the sport. It seems likely that this would end up being one of the biggest combat sporting events of all-time.

In the meantime, Khabib seems focused on helping the sport of MMA reach the Olympic Games.

Here’s What We Know About Khabib’s Olympic Plans

Khabib Nurmagomedov was born and raised in Dagestan, Russia. This small territory is known for grooming a number of Olympic champions in various combat sports. Khabib Nurmagomedov has been trying to get the sport of MMA into the Olympic Games for years now.

With his “retirement” now official, Khabib seems to have time to truly pursue these goals. Khabib told the media about his plans this week. The lightweight kingpin believes that MMA could quickly grow to become one of the most popular Olympic sports on television.

“The inclusion of MMA in the Olympics is one of my main tasks for the next couple of years, we are already working in this direction. In the near future, I will have many meetings, including with the President of the Olympic Committee. I think, if not in Paris, then in In Los Angeles, we have a great chance of promoting MMA,” he said… “I think that if it enters the Olympics program, it will be on a par with football and athletics in interest.”

This is exciting news for fans. MMA is now one of the most popular sports around the world. Its inclusion into the Olympic Games would likely help the sport to grow even further. As Khabib mentions, however, it will likely take years in order for this to happen.

Khabib’s Olympic plans are likely to be supported by many major MMA promotions. This would be a fantastic way for these promotions to find world-class talent. Hopefully, members of the International Olympic Committee support these plans.

We will continue offering updates on these Olympic plans over the next few months!

Japan’s Olympic Plans Are Slowly Coming Together

For years, Japan was gearing up to host the 2020 Summer Olympic Games. Many expected this to become one of the most impressive Olympic events of all-time. By February of this year, however, many began expressing doubt that the Games would be able to take place.

In March, the IOC and members of Japan’s government confirmed that the Olympics were being postponed by a year. The plan is now to host this event over the summer of 2021. There are still many problems that have arisen in holding the Olympics.

One of the main issues is whether or not fans will be allowed to attend the Games. Obviously, there are serious fears that allowing fans to this event would result in major infection spread. Interestingly, Japanese government officials recently told the media that fans could be allowed if a vaccine becomes widely available by next year.

It seems that next year’s Summer Olympics will be “simplified” in several ways. That may include fewer ceremonies and gatherings amongst the athletes. The IOC is confirming that things will look much different than in previous years.

Anything can happen between now and next summer. Some are still worrying that the Olympic Games could be forced to be canceled once again.
