Lamar Jackson – Fastest Player to 5,000 Passing Yards & 2,000 Rushing Yards

Last season, Lamar Jackson broke Michael Vick’s record of 1,039 rushing yards for a quarterback in a single season. For 13 years, no one came close to tying Vick’s mark. Lamar obliterated the record by rushing for 1,206 yards last year, during his MVP season.

On Sunday, Jackson erased another record set by Vick, becoming the fastest player in the history of the NFL to throw for 5,000 yards and rush for another 2,000 yards. He achieved the feat in just 35 games, topping Vick’s previous mark of 39 games, during Sunday’s 31-17 win over the Washington Football Team.

When asked about the record after the game, Jackson wasn’t too thrilled:

“[Records will mean something] probably in the long run,” he said. “I’m focused on trying to win championships. We still have bigger fish to fry right now. Those accolades I feel, I’ll cherish those later.”

The Baltimore Ravens got back on track in Jackson’s quest to win a championship after beating the Washington Football Team 31-17 on Sunday. Coming off a humbling 34-20 loss to the defending champions Kansas City Chiefs last Monday, the Ravens bounced back with a strong performance against Washington.

Longest Touchdown Run of His Career

After he was bottled up by the Washington defense in the first quarter, Jackson exploded on a 50-yard touchdown run, the longest of his career. It was also the longest touchdown run by a quarterback in the NFL in the last five seasons. Marcus Mariota scored on an 87-yard touchdown run in 2015.

On 3rd and 4, Jackson held on to the ball and followed guard Bradley Bozeman’s lead block. He stiff-armed Landon Collins at the 35-yard line before getting past Ronald Darby in the end zone. Jackson clocked 20.1 miles per hour on that run, his fastest speed ever on a touchdown run. He rushed for “only” 53 yards, which was enough to put him over the 2,000-yard rushing mark for his career.

The play was electric but it wasn’t all high fives for him as the league MVP heard from head coach John Harbaugh after he lifted the ball up in the air in celebration at the 15-yard line and nearly got tackled before crossing the goal line.

Reaching the 5,000-Yard Passing Plateau

After a career-low passing game against the Chiefs in his previous outing, Jackson eclipsed his 97-yard total against Kansas City in the first half alone. The reigning MVP finished the game with 193 yards through the air on 14-21 passing with two touchdowns, both 20-yard passes to Mark Andrews.

He needed only 96 yards to reach the 5,000-yard plateau. Jackson achieved the mark with his first TD pass to Andrews in the first half which was set up after punter Sam Koch’s 15-yard completion on a fourth and nine.

Late in the second quarter though, Jackson’s streak of 159 consecutive passes without an interception came to an end after he was picked by Kendall Fuller on a shotgun with 31 seconds left in the first half. But that was the only blot in a virtuoso performance by the best dual-threat quarterback in the history of the league.

Off to Week 5

With the win, the Ravens improved to 3-1 on the season. Baltimore is currently in second place in the AFC North behind the still undefeated  Pittsburgh Steelers. Next up for Baltimore is a home game against 2019 top overall draft pick Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals.

The 1-2-1 Bengals are at the bottom of the AFC North but are coming off their first win of the season. Behind Burrow’s rookie record third straight 300-passing yard game, the Bengals defeated the Jacksonville Jaguars also on Sunday. Cincinnati heads to Baltimore with plenty of confidence after picking up their maiden victory of the season. However, they are heavy underdogs to Lamar and the Ravens.

According to the early betting odds from BetOnline, the Ravens are +14 point betting favorites to beat the Bengals. This is the biggest odds that Cincinnati has faced since they were +16.5 underdogs against the Chargers in December 2018. Baltimore is also a massive -825 Moneyline favorites against Cincinnati and they are currently the biggest betting favorites on the October 11th schedule.
