Lawmakers in the state of Kansas have been working to make sports betting legal for several years. All signs point to this happening in 2022. Only a few steps need to be taken for the first legal sportsbooks in Kansas to become available.

Several other nearby states in the Midwest are expected to make sports betting legal this year, too. Now is a great time to talk about what needs to happen for sports gambling options to become available in these states.

Let’s get into it!

The First Legal Sportsbooks in Kansas Could Go Live Soon

Sports betting is growing more popular around the United States every month. Recently, an increasing number of lawmakers in the state of Kansas have chosen to embrace legalizing this form of gambling. These officials recognize how much tax money can be earned from this industry.

Legislation to allow legal sportsbooks in Kansas has been making its way through various committees throughout 2022. This Thursday, members of the House and Senate met to discuss the differences in their two sports betting bills. Hope is that they come to an agreement on tax rates and various rule sets for this new industry.

The majority of lawmakers in this state realize that it’s long overdue to allow sports betting. Other nearby states are earning large amounts of tax revenue used to fund various social projects every month. Even Kansas Governor Laura Kelly, who often keeps her cards hidden, is voicing her support for the legalization of sports betting.

“I do think we ought to have some sort of sports betting here in the state of Kansas,” Kelly said.. “I know so many people who go to Iowa every weekend. I’d like for them to stay here and spend their money in the state of Kansas.”

Neighboring Missouri is also working hard to finally allow sports betting. Now is the perfect time to take a look at the latest progress this state has been getting its first sportsbooks up and running.

Missouri’s Push to Legalize Sports Betting Continues

Historically speaking, Missouri has not exactly been a gambling-friendly state. Lawmakers here have largely pished against the legalization of sports betting since PASPA was removed in 2018. That has begun to change in 2022, however, leading some to believe this is the year that sports gambling will finally become available here.

Several bills to allow sports betting in Missouri have been presented this year. All of them would allow for sports bets to be made in-person and online. One measure approved last week by the Missouri House calls for an 8% tax rate on all sports betting operators.

This is a slightly higher tax rate than what is seen in other states. Certain officials are also concerned about the effects of problem gambling with legal sportsbooks up and running. Others push against that idea and are claiming the state will earn roughly $20 million in annual tax revenue with land-based and mobile sportsbooks up and running.

More of Missouri’s lawmakers are pointing out how soon legal sportsbooks in Kansas could launch. This will likely lead to many residents in Missouri making the trip across the Kansas border to make sports wagers. State leaders will not want to see valuable tax revenue flowing across the border.

It seems more and more likely that Missouri will choose to legalize sports betting this year. Several other states including California and Massachusetts are expected to do the same. Stay tuned for updates!
