Oklahoma: nine casinos temporarily shutting down to help conserve power

he announcement comes after multiple utility companies falling under the control of Southwest Power Pool (SPP) said they are running low on energy supply.The Cherokee Nation said they started the closures at 5 p.m. today and plan on reopening on Wednesday at 1 p.m. but could change depending on weather and energy conditions.

Temporary operational shutdowns reportedly include all nine Cherokee Casino properties, Hard Rock Tulsa and other business, retail and cultural sites.

“CNB has built a reputation for making tough decisions for the right reasons, and that legacy will continue today as we put the needs of our communities ahead of our business goals,” said CEO of Cherokee Nation Businesses Chuck Garrett. “As an industry leader, we hope we can inspire other businesses throughout the region to join us as we plan, prepare and proceed through the next few days of inclement weather.”

Southwest Power Pool provides service to the states of Kansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Missouri, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana, Minnesota, Iowa, Wyoming, and Nebraska.

The Roland Travel Plaza will remain open 24 hours to serve the community with emergency needs and the Tahlequah Outpost will be open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Cherokee Nation said all employees who were scheduled to work during this time will be paid for their shifts.
