Pick to Finish Top 3 at the Milan-San Remo Cycling Race

On Saturday, March 20^th, Wout Van Aert returns to Milan, Italy, to defend his title in the 112^th edition of the Milan-San Remo race. This is the longest of the monument races coming in at just under 300km, which is just over 185 miles.

The Milan-San Remo marks the beginning of the spring classics and is also considered a sprinters classic due to the relatively flat course. However, there are some punchy hills late in the race that make it hard for the pure sprinters to win.

Van Aert’s 2021 Season To Date

As of this writing, Wout Van Aert has only competed in two races. His first event was Strade Bianche on March 6^th and he finished 4^th overall. However, he did come in behind winner Mathieu Van der Poel who is the favorite to win this weekend’s Milan-San Remo.

Yet, WVA bounced back a week later when he had a stellar performance in the seven stage Tirreno-Adriatico.

Van Aert edged out Caleb Ewan for a win on Stage 1 and proceeded to claim three more Top 3 stage results before winning the individual time trial on Stage 7.

His week-long performance resulted in winning the points classification and finishing second in the general classification.

For only competing since the start of March, Wout Van Aert looks in great form already.

WVA in the Milan-San Remo

Saturday will mark the third time that Van Aert has competed in the Milan-San Remo. His first appearance was in 2019 and he finished 6^th overall.

However, WVA came back strong in 2020 and won the race as he pulled away from his rivals with a few kilometers left.

I believe Wout Van Aert has a great chance at winning the race for the second straight year which would mark the first time that accomplishment has happened since 2000-2001 when Erik Zabel won in back-to-back years.
