Spurs’ Premier League Title Odds Improve After Win Over Manchester City

  • Spurs improve to +500 to win Premier League after 2-0 win over Manchester City
  • Tottenham tied with Chelsea for the third-best odds of any team
  • Liverpool (+130), Man City (+275) still listed as frontrunners

It’s been quite a while until Tottenham Hotspur have won a domestic trophy. In fact, the last English trophy Spurs won in any competition was the League Cup back in 2008. Before that, their most recent trophy was the 1991 FA Cup. While Tottenham have been one of England’s most successful sides in terms of winning percentage over the past decade or so, Spurs have had an incredibly difficult time actually closing the deal.

However, Tottenham appear primed to compete for the Premier League title this season. Spurs haven’t won the English top-flight since the 1960-61 campaign, which was 30 years before the Premier League even existed.

The side finished inside the top-three in the league in each of the three seasons between 2015 and 2018 under Mauricio Pochettino, but the team earned relatively disappointing fourth- and sixth-place finishes in each of the past two camapigns.

Through nine matches of the 2020-21 season, Spurs sit alone atop the table. Tottenham’s impressive 2-0 win over Manchester City over the weekend ran the side’s Premier League unbeaten streak to eight. Spurs’ lone blemish so far this term was a 1-0 defeat against Everton back in the first match of the season.

Spurs Looking Like a Threat

While the season is still too young to draw any definitive conclusions, Spurs have still seen their Premier League title betting odds improve considerably. Following their triumph over City, Tottenham’s odds to win the league have been boosted to +500. That puts them on par with Chelsea for the third-best odds of any team, trailing only Liverpool (+130) and City (+275).

City began the year as betting favorites, and with good reason. Pep Guardiola’s side has won two of the last three league titles, along with a second-place finish last season. The Citizens’ form has been woefully lacking so far this season, however, which has the Sky Blues looking at a shockingly large early-season deficit.

The loss to Tottenham over the weekend was particularly dismal, and it dropped City all the way to 13th in the table. There is still more than enough time in the 38-game season to make a run, but they can’t afford to lose much more ground. City have amassed just 12 points from eight games, which puts them eight points behind Spurs and Liverpool at the top of the table.

Liverpool have been crushed by injuries this season, but Jurgen Klopp has still been able to lead the team to favorable results. The Reds trounced Leicester City 3-0 over the weekend despite playing without Mohamed Salah and Virgil Van Dijk. Alisson, Joe Gomez, Fabinho, Thiago, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have all missed time so far this season due to injury, as well. Van Dijk and Gomez, Klopp’s first-choice pairing in central defense, are both out for the entire season.

Spurs’ Upcoming Clash vs. Chelsea

Chelsea have looked better of late, with three straight wins in the league to pull into a tie with Leicester for third place on 18 points. The Blues will take on Tottenham in a highly-anticipated London Derby this coming weekend. Jose Mourinho will once again face one of his old sides in what should be a thrilling contest.

Harry Kane and Heung-min Son have been the catalysts behind Tottenham’s blazing start, but don’t overlook the contributions from some of the other key rotation players. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has proven to be a very shrewd addition to the midfield, while Serge Aurier and Sergio Reguilon have given Mourinho’s side good width down either flank.

Chelsea are listed as slight +115 favorites to win Sunday’s game at Stamford Bridge, with Spurs checking in at +225.
