Pick: Tim Tszyu

Odds: -650

$100 Could Win You…$115.38

To the delight of fight fans, we have a compelling mid-week matchup between super welterweight contenders as the unbeaten Tim Tszyu (17-0, 13 KOs) takes on the Irish veteran Dennis Hogan (28-3-1, 7 KOs).

The winner of this contest will be the top challenger for the regular WBO super welterweight title currently held by Brian Castano (17-0-1, 12 KOs). Will Hogan pull off the upset and send Tszyu’s fellow countrymen home disappointed or will Tszyu provide the sellout crowd with something to cheer about?

The main event fight is set to begin at 7:30am ET live from the Newcastle Entertainment Centre in Broadmeadow, New South Wales, Australia.

Tszyu vs Hogan Betting Odds

The following odds are courtesy of BetOnline:

Fighter Moneylines Over/Under
Tim Tszyu -650 NA
Dennis Hogan +425 NA

Tszyu is the betting favorite at nearly double the odds of Hogan. He can be found listed online and at most boxing betting apps with odds ranging from -650 to -1100. Although these odds are lower than his last bout, they’re still vastly different from his lowest odds over the last four years which were -250 against Jeff Horn.

This will be the third straight fight that Hogan is the underdog. His previous two bouts were against Jermall Charlo and Jaime Munguia.

The Fight is in Jeopardy of Being Called Off

This certainly isn’t the news we want to see with less than two days until the fight. However, there is an issue that could prompt Hogan not to go through with the contest in front of what’s believe to be a sellout crowd all there to see Tszyu.

At the press conference on Monday, Hogan wore a shirt with his sponsor PointsBet on it. However, Matt Rose who is the promoter of No Limit Boxing asked Hogan to change his shirt because the event has Sportsbet as a sponsor.

This request irritated Hogan and his camp to the point where they have threatened not to walk to the ring on Wednesday night if Rose or anyone else doesn’t let Hogan wear his boxing shorts that have PointsBet across the band:

“They’ve basically tried to pull money from me. Pull money from my family. It’s not good. My sponsors put bread on the table for my family. So wearing that shirt, what does it take away from the promoters? What does it take away from their betting agency? I didn’t get emotional about it today, but I have PointsBet across the front band of my shorts and I will be wearing them into the fight on Wednesday. There’s nothing they can do about that. The fight will not go ahead if he doesn’t.”

This could be an ugly situation if the fight is cancelled at the last minute. Hopefully they can let Hogan wear his shorts and we get to see a good fight.

Hogan is in Must Win Mode

Hogan has lost two fights in a row to fighters with a combined record of 61-0. His last fight was against Jermall Charlo in December 2019 where he lost via 7th round TKO for the WBC middleweight title.

Prior to that, Hogan lost to Jaime Munguia in April 2019 via majority decision. That was for the WBO super welterweight title which Hogan is looking to get another crack at if he can win this fight on Wednesday.

Prior to those two losses, Hogan had won six straight contests. Another loss would sink his chances of being a title contender. At 36, there aren’t going to be many more opportunities for the Irishman to fight for world titles.

Tszyu is Looking to Inflict Damage

Tszyu is unbeaten in his career and on a mission to win world titles. He knows a win over Hogan will give him a big boost towards a world title fight and he’s 100% focused on winning.

In fact, the Australian is also focused on doing some damage when he gets inside the ring:

“I’m here to hurt my opponent. It’s not going to be no warm-up fight, that’s for sure. I’m expecting the best Dennis Hogan, he’s a great fighter and I’ve got full respect for him. But when you get in the ring… this is my ring, you’re in my world and I’m not going to let anyone out. In boxing I’m not here to tip and tap – I’m here to do damage.”

Tszyu was referring to comments made by Hogan’s team that this was just going to be a tune-up fight for the Irishman.

Tszyu last fought in December where he won via 1st round TKO. It was the third straight fight where he won via TKO/KO. He also beat Jeff Horn via 8th round TKO in August 2020 and Jack Brubaker via 4th round TKO in December 2019.

The three TKO/KO wins in a row have bumped his career total up to 13 overall.

Who Becomes Top Contender for WBO Title?

Tszyu is 10 years younger and has a four inch reach advantage over Hogan in addition to fighting in front of his fellow countrymen. If that weren’t enough, this location also saw his father Kostya Tszyu win seven times in his boxing career.

This fight is almost like a rite of passage for Tim to go from unheard of by the average fan to a potential world champ. It’s also as if he’s fighting for his heritage and father’s legacy as well. The stars are aligned for Tszyu in this fight. Can he deliver?

Boxing Pick: Tim Tszyu (-650)

I see no reason to think he won’t. He’s younger, has the reach advantage, and also has the knockout power to stop Hogan in this contest. Let’s also not forget that Hogan hasn’t been in the ring since December 2019. So, there could be some ring rust as well.

As of this writing, there are no available odds for the over/under betting option, distance or method of victory. I suggest keeping an eye out for those wagers because I have a feeling this bout won’t go the full 10 rounds. I suspect Tszyu is going to score the TKO/KO.
