s it continues to recover from being shut down by the coronavirus pandemic in March, Twin River announced on Monday that it has rehired nearly three-quarters of its Rhode Island workforce.
Twin River employed 2,500 people in the state before COVID-19 forced the closure of its casinos in Lincoln and Tiverton and many of those employees were put on furlough.
The casinos reopened on a limited basis at the end of May and by August more than 1,300 were still furloughed, according to a layoff notice filed with the state Department of Labor and Training. Twin River’s Rhode Island casinos returned to 24-hour operation Sept. 25.
The number of Twin River workers who haven’t come back is now down to 671, according to Twin River spokesperson Patti Doyle Monday.
“We hope and expect our rehiring will continue in the weeks and months to come,” Doyle wrote. “This will be driven by our ability to reopen more amenities — such as our two hotels — and a likely increase in business volume with the eventual lift of the Massachusetts quarantine.”
Travelers from Rhode Island to Connecticut are also under quarantine orders from those states.
Last week Twin River announced that it had entered into an agreement to purchase Jumer’s Casino & Hotel in Rock Island, Illinois for $120 million in cash.
