The world’s best players head to Winged Foot on Thursday for the right to lift the 2020 US Open.

With two-time champion Brooks Koepka out of this year’s tournament, and Winged Foot one of the US Open’s most notoriously challenging courses, this could be one of the most open majors in years.

Here’s our look at the state of play in the early 2020 US Open golf betting…

Defending champion Gary Woodland (82/1) will be back to defend the shock title he landed at Pebble Beach last season, one of 10 previous champions in this year’s field.

Of those names, 2016 winner Dustin Johnson (17/2) looks the most likely candidate to add to his major tally, with the current World No. 1 in fine form heading to New York after winning the Tour Championship – a victory that saw him scoop the £11.2m FedEx Cup in the process.

Justin Rose (50/1) enjoyed his finest hour in this tournament at Merion in 2013 and tied third at Pebble Beach last season, while 2011 winner Rory McIlroy (61/4) will be looking to celebrate becoming a father with his first major win in six years.

We could be overdue a non-American winner, with Germany’s Martin Kaymer (120/1) the last man from outside the USA to take this title, back in 2014.

The Venue: Winged Foot

Winged Foot has been waiting more than a decade to host its sixth US Open.

The tournament is returning to Westchester County for the first time since 2006, where Australian Geoff Oglivy claimed his sole major.

This course has produced two of the highest major championship scores in the history of golf, with Oglivy scoring five over par to notch his career best, while +7 proved enough for Hale Irwin to seal this major in 1974. That tournament proved so bruising for so many players it went down in popular folklore as ‘The Massacre at Winged Foot’.

Make no mistake: whoever emerges as the latest major champion on Sunday will have faced a war of attrition.

US Open Golf Odds: The Pre-Tournament Favourites

Jon Rahm – 77/10 – edging closer to breaking his Major duck after some eye-catching Tour wins in 2020.

Dustin Johnson – 17/2 – World No. 1 looks to be hitting peak form at just the right time.

Justin Thomas – 53/4 – quietly enjoying a fine 2020 including a 3-stroke win at the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational.

Rory McIlroy – 61/4 – win here would cap off a fairy-tale month for the Northern Irishman.

Xander Schauffele – 67/4 – knocking on the door with several top 10 major finishes to his name in recent times.

Collin Morikawa – 19/1 – surprise winner at the PGA Championship; can he prove it was no fluke here?

Odds correct at time of writing but may be subject to change.
