US PGA Championship Betting Preview

Finally, a major is in the offing and we have had plenty of golf to whet the appetite in time for the action to get underway.

Naturally, the big guns are all out in force and it should make for some compelling viewing!

Here are our US PGA betting tips…

The Course

TPC Harding Park is situated in glorious San Francisco and dates back to 1925. The course has hosted some famous events in recent years including the WGC-Cadillac match-play won by Rory McIlroy in 2015, and Tiger Woods won the WGC-American Express Championship here in 2005.

As is often the case with majors in the States (and seen on Ian Poulter’s Instagram!) the rough is likely to be problematic with varying lengths within the same area. Reports suggest the greens have also been tightened to over half their natural width, therefore accuracy off the tee will be key.

Five Par-5s will provide the players with some birdie opportunities with three of them coming in quick succession and this could swing the final placings on Sunday.

Players

Justin Thomas came away with victory in last week’s St Jude Invitational after Brooks Koepka made an uncustomary mistake on the par 5 16th and despite birdying the next, he went onto bogey the 18th to finish three shots behind Thomas.

Despite this, Koepka is aiming to complete a hat-trick of US PGA victories and he still maintains the star quality to see past the field. 10/1 may seem a little skinny for a few but we know he has the game and eliminating some of the mistakes as seen on Sunday can help him towards a memorable third consecutive tournament win.

Daniel Berger has impressed since the return of golf and despite missing the cut at the Memorial Tournament he has finished 1st, T2 & T3 in his other three events. 35/1 is decent value for the man from Florida, who could see his confidence grow with a positive first round.

Don’t rule out Phil Mickelson. He still arguably still has the best short game in the world and whilst the days of him leading betting markets may be behind him, he has a squeak at an each-way placing and with Marathonbet paying 7 places (EW Terms 1/5), and at 72/1, he could be seen as some positive value.
