The Volta a Catalunya is underway after the first stage was completed on Monday, March 22nd. The breakaway was able to stay away from the pack and go on to battle it out in a four man sprint as Andreas Kron snagged the win at the line.
Stage 2 won’t be as nail biting as the race heads to Banyoles for an individual time trial (ITT). Remi Cavagna is one of the favorites to win this stage. Can the Portuguese rider give Deceuninck-Quick Step a big win on Tuesday?

Remi Cavagna is the betting favorite to win this stage with cycling betting sites. The next closest rider is Rohan Dennis at +200 odds.
Despite being a large favorite, there’s still value with his -135 odds. For someone that many pundits and bookies think will win, -135 isn’t bad at all.

Cavagna’s Top 3 wager at -500 odds offers no value and isn’t really worth taking.
Previous Time Trial Results
Cavagna has evolved into a strong time trialist over the last few years. Last season, he won the ITT in the French nationals. He also finished in the Top 8 for numerous other time trials like the World Championships where he was 7th.
In his last 20 time trials, Cavagna has finished in the Top 5 eight times and 14 times in the Top 10. His worst result over that stretch was 23rd.
2021 Season So Far
Cavagna isn’t going to win many races, but he performed well in the only ITT that he’s competed in this year and that was Stage 3 of Paris-Nice.
Remi finished 2nd on that day. He tied Stefan Bissegger who ended up getting the win on the tie breaker. However, they both were six seconds ahead of Primoz Roglic.
Neither Roglic nor Bissegger is competing the Volta a Catalunya (VaC). The next rider to finish high in the TT on that stage who is also riding in the VaC is Brandon McNulty. However, he finished nine seconds behind Cavagna.
Remi finished 134th on Stage 1 of the VaC as he was in the pack with the rest of the peloton. Prior to this seven day race, Catalagna had the following comments about the Stage 2 time trial:
“I had to go to Belgium and then to the Tour of the Basque Country. But there was an injured person in the team for the Tour of Catalonia (March 22-28), I volunteered to help the guys and try to win a stage. There is an 18.5 km individual time trial that suits me well. It will be a good opportunity to catch up with me in quotes ”.
Pick Cavagna to Win the ITT
It’s not like this will be a cakewalk for Cavagna as there are some other top time trialists that he will have to beat like Rohan Dennis, Brand McNulty, his teammate Joao Almeida and Geraint Thomas to name a few.

Yet, when you look at Cavagna’s last two years of time trials, it’s hard to argue against him for the stage victory on Tuesday. So, let’s not overthink things or try to get cute here. Take Remi Cavagna to win the Individual Time Trial on Stage 2 of the Volta a Catalunya.
