You Probably Won’t Use These 5 Craps Tips

Almost every time I play craps in a live casino at least 1 other player frowns at the way I play. They seem to think that the way I play craps is wrong or working against them in some way.

Fortunately, this doesn’t bother me. And it can’t bother you either if you choose to play real money craps the way that gives you the best chance to win.

This is why most craps gamblers aren’t going to use the 5 tips listed in this article. They get stuck in tradition and superstition that costs them money. Don’t make this same craps mistake.

1 – The Only Come Out Roll Wager You Should Use

You can make multiple wagers on every craps roll, including come out rolls. But you can only make 1 of 2 wagers on the come out roll itself.

I’m not trying to be confusing, so let me explain this in a different way. The come out roll starts a possible series of rolls. While there are other wagers available that don’t have anything to do with the roll being a come out roll, if you want to bet on the series starting with a come out roll you have to bet on either the pass line or don’t pass line.

Placing a come out roll wager is important. I explain why it’s important to place a come out roll wager in the next section. But for now, the important thing to learn is that 1 of the come out roll wagers is one of only two bets that the best craps players make.

The common come out roll wager is the pass line. This is what most craps players use, and if you don’t use this option some craps players seem to get offended. But this isn’t the correct wager based on odds and gambling mathematics.

The proper wager on a come out roll is don’t pass. The odds are a little bit better on don’t pass, so you lose less in the long run making this wager instead of the pass line wager.

On a come out roll you can win, lose, or have a point set. When a point is set the shooter continues rolling until a 7 is rolled or the point number is rolled.

When any of these things happen a new come out roll is performed.


When a come out roll is next, the only bet you should make is don’t pass. Ignore all of the other wager options and all of the other craps players.

Now you know one of the two wagers that the best craps players use. The next section explains what the second wager you’re going to use is.

2 – Why Maximum Odds Are All That Matter

The only reason why you have to make a come out roll is so that you have access to the best wager in the casino. The best wager in the casino is called an odds bet, and it’s only available at the craps table after you place a come out roll wager and a point is set.

When you place your don’t pass wager and a point is set, place an odds wager. If you can afford to do it, place the maximum amount the table allows on the odds.

Craps tables don’t have a section listed for an odds wager, so you can ask the dealer how to place an odds wager. The most common way is to slide a bet behind your don’t pass wager and state you’re placing an odds wager.

Casino let you place a larger wager amount on the odds than on the come out roll. This is a multiple of your come out roll wager. If the table doesn’t list the odds amounts that are allowed, ask the dealer what the maximum odds are.

The odds wager is the only bet at the table or in the casinos that has a 100% return to player. This is important because it means that you’re breaking even on the odds in the long run.

The 2 wagers that you’re going to use when you play craps are don’t pass and full odds. Don’t make any other wagers, no matter what anyone else says. These 2 wagers give you the best chance to win.

3 – Is Controlled Shooting Really a Thing?

If you’ve never heard of controlled shooting or dice control it’s a theory that you can set the dice a certain way and train your body to throw them the same way every time. If you can do this the theory is that you have some control over the total of the dice.

Here are a couple facts about controlled shooting. If you can really train your body to do this and it works, you can make a ton of money playing craps. The return to player percentage is high in comparison to other games to start with, so you don’t have to alter many throws to turn a loss into a profit.

The second fact is the problem. I’ve never been able to find proof that it works, I’ve never been able to do it, and the casinos are still offering craps games.

If controlled shooting really worked the casinos would be losing money on craps. And casinos stop offering games that lose money.

I’ve come to the conclusion that controlled shooting is a myth. You’re welcome to research it and try to make it work for you, because if by some miracle you can make it work you can get rich.

But I don’t know any craps players that got rich by playing craps. A few might get rich selling you information about dice control, but they’re not getting rich rolling the bones.

4 – The Hot Shooter Fallacy

This is a little different than a craps strategy like controlled shooting, but it belongs in the same general category. Many craps players believe that a shooter can get hot. And when a shooter gets hot these players believe that they can make certain wagers that make money during the hot roll.

Here’s the problem that I have with the idea of a hot craps shooter. Craps is designed in a way that almost guarantees random dice rolls. The way the tables and walls of the tables are designed, it makes the dice bounce off the walls in a random pattern.

True randomness is the opposite of the hot shooter theory. But true randomness does allow for a shooter to appear to be hot on occasion.

When I play craps or any other casino game I base the way I play on mathematical facts. And this is how you should gamble also. The idea of a hot shooter isn’t based on mathematical fact.

The belief that a shooter can get hot or cold is closer to a superstition than a fact. And this costs craps players a lot of money.

5 – How to Play Craps for Fun

Craps is fun, and this is the main reason why most craps players participate. They hope to win, but they keep coming back to play again and again even if they lose. In the end these craps players are willing to pay in the form of losses to have fun.

This is fine, and in truth this is what most gamblers are doing whether they play craps or not. But there’s a better way to play craps for fun that wasn’t available when I started playing.

When I started playing craps the only option was to play in a land-based casino. Not only were internet and mobile casinos not a thing yet, the internet wasn’t even available.

I know that this makes me old, but I’m proof that an old dog can learn a few new tricks.
